Our Difference

If this isn’t your first time seeing a psychologist or counsellor, chances are you may have had a less than favourable experience with some.

The most common feedback that we receive from clients about their previous experience with other psychologists or counsellors is that: (a) they did not feel a connection with the professional; and (b) the treatment was either not helpful at all or only helped for a short while. When you come to see us, the following is what we offer you.

Our Difference

Why Choose Us?

Why choose The EMDR Clinic

We strive to connect and work with you at your point of need.

Unlike some other places you may have visited, we do not treat you as just another number. A personal, heartfelt connection with you is of utmost importance to us as much as it is to you. After all, research has shown that the therapist-client relationship is the major determinant of successful outcomes in treatment.

1

We help you resolve the core, underlying issues once and for all.

This means when treatment is over, we want you to walk out thinking and feeling differently about yourself and your life, completely free from the past. We are not interested merely in reduction or ‘management’ of symptoms, unlike some other mental health professionals you may have seen before.

2

We employ EMDR therapy which is simple, effective and results driven.

EMDR therapy has been clinically shown to produce results within a shorter time than many other conventional therapies. This ultimately saves you not just time but also money as you will not need to make countless repeated visits to a psychologist and/or a psychiatrist over a long term! You will likely also be able to cease psychotropic medication (e.g. antidepressants) by the time you finish your treatment with us.

3

Our expertise in EMDR is up to date with the latest neuroscience developments.

We keep up to date with the latest developments in neuroscience and this is reflected in the treatments we utilise. Some of the knowledge that our treatments involve include recent findings of how trauma affects the brain/body over the lifespan and Neuroplasticity (i.e. the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life).

4

We use EMDR therapy as our main form of treatment.

There are psychologists and therapists who may incorporate EMDR therapy only as an adjunct therapy in their practice, either due to their lack of training/experience in EMDR therapy and/or their preference for other forms of treatment. But when you see us, you are assured an EMDR-focused therapy experience so you get exactly what you pay for.

5

Our results in EMDR therapy are enhanced by addressing childhood attachment needs.

From the reported experience of some of our clients who had seen other EMDR therapists, we have noted that their treatment did not address childhood attachment needs, which often led to limited efficacy in EMDR treatment. When you see us, we do a screening of your unmet attachment needs and ensure that those needs are met during the course of treatment so that you get the best possible results with EMDR therapy.

Referrals Taken

In order to access counselling/therapy services, most people would normally obtain a Medicare referral (i.e. Mental Health Care Plan and referral letter) from their doctor. However there are several other options that may be available to you as well depending on your circumstances. Here are some of the referrals we accept:

Medicare

Workcover

TAC

DVA

NDIS

Self-referrals

Kindly note that with the exception of Medicare and self-referrals, you will not incur any cost with all the other referral options above as we will bill the respective organizations.

Psychologist appointments usually last for about an hour each time. In the first session or two, we would typically obtain information of each new client regarding background/history in order to determine their specific concerns, current life issues and other precipitating/underlying factors (both present and past) that may contribute to their difficulties.

A few questionnaires ascertaining your emotional functioning will also need to completed at this time. You need not worry about coming prepared with what to say to the psychologist as you will be guided along each step of the way. Just come in with an open mind and you will be fine!
